Meningococcal disease is a serious illness. It can lead to meningitis, which is infection of the lining of the brain and spinal cord, and infections of the blood. Even when treated with high doses of antibiotics, it kills about 1 in 10 infected people. Of those who survive, some may end up suffering from hearing loss, brain or kidney damage, loss of arms or legs, learning disabilities and other serious complications.
Anyone can get meningococcal disease, but infants, adolescents and young adults are at the highest risk. This germ can be present in the nose or throat of many people. The germ can spread from person to person through close contact such as coughing, kissing, sharing utensils and beverages, or living in close quarters. Therefore, preventing meningococcal disease is so important and vaccination with a meningococcal vaccine is the best way to prevent the disease.
